Session 5: Interobserver Variability

Facilitator: Linnea Capps

Learning Objectives
  • Recognize the variability inherent in clinical exam findings and laboratory test results.
  • Interpret the "kappa statistic."

  • Please complete the homework and bring it to the session.
  • Please read the article about interobserver variability in cervical cancer screening. Be prepared to discuss why there is variability and what its effect should be in assessing individuals being screened and in shaping policy about cervical cancer screening.

Briefly review the other articles (just the abstract of the older one on echocardiography) and be prepared to discuss the same questions including how they should influence our thinking about the variability in the results of diagnostic tests.
