From our Program Director:
I'm taking the opportunity to write the occasional e-mail to all of you from the APHA national meeting in Boston.  As I mentioned to some of those in the Liberation Medicine course, this is an important organization for progressive physicians.   I have been coming almost every year since the first meeting I attended many years ago when it happened to be in NYC.  I learned that there was a Socialist Caucus which sponsored many sessions health care and the political landscape, social determinants, etc.  I also found, in the Medical Care section, a number of progressive physicians who have made APHA a professional home since it is willing to allow more open talk from a leftist perspective.

This year's keynote speaker at the opening session was Sir Michael Marmot whose speech about his many years of studying disparities and advocating for the underserved was both inspiring and at times sprinkled with his British humor.  He was also honored at the yearly health activists dinner, an enthusiastic and multi-generational celebration of activism.

Anyone who might consider going next year, let me know.  It will Nov 15-19 in New Orleans

I hope you are all having a good month.  I assume the PGY-1s are enjoying the orientation to Social Medicine and the Bronx.  I'll see some of you next week in the early morning sessions on immigration.
