New bupe patients!?

posted Sep 15, 2013, 8:05 AM by PC/SM Chief Resident

Hi all -

Please let Angela Giovanniello or me know if you are particularly interested in getting new bupe patients. Just as a reminder, Angela is our bupe coordinator and needs to be aware of all patients receiving bupe treatment at CHCC (we must keep a log of all bupe pts and the DEA "X" number to which they are assigned). Typically, new patients first are screened by Angela, and have a full substance abuse history taken by her. Then, based on how complicated (or not) the patient is, Angela will assign that patient to a resident or attending based on availability and interest. So, please let her or me know if you are interested.

Also, if you are interested in getting a "waiver" to prescribe bupe, a list of the 8-hour trainings are at:http://buprenorphine.samhsa.gov/pls/bwns/training. Most are internet-based trainings that do not need to be 8 hours at once (e.g. you can do the training for 1 hour one day, then return for another 2 hours another day, etc). We have been able to reimburse residents for the cost of the training (typically $175), and the training is good for life. So, whenever you get your DEA number, you can apply the training to that DEA number to get the special DEA "X" number.

Please let me know if you have any questions about anything related to bupe treatment.
