Session 4: Race, Class, and Health

Speakers: Dr. Matt Anderson & Dr. Susan Moscou

Questions to consider for discussion:

1. The crux of Dr. Jones' argument in the Gardener's Tale is that race is an imprecise measure of genetics or innate disease risk but a precise measure of the impact of racism. Do you agree or disagree with this? Why?

2. What levels of racism does Dr. Jones describe? Can you think of particular patients of yours that have described to you their experience of multiple levels of racism? Can you think of examples in the hospital or clinic where you have observed personally-mediated racism in its overt or covert form?

3. In what ways do Dr. Anderson and coauthors build on Dr. Jones' argument? Do you commonly include race in clinical presentations? Do you plan to continue this? Why or why not?
